Teach Yourself Arabic Calligraphy: Five Scripts

The book offers an introduction to all the major styles of calligraphy present in in the Arab east: Naskh, Thuluth, Ruq’a, Nasta’liq, Diwani… Unfortunately, no Maghrebi scripts represented, and no Kufic either.

Those scripts are Ottoman and post-Ottoman in nature, so people studying Ottoman (and to some extent Persian, because of Nasta’liq) can profit from the book. However, all the instructions are in Arabic, including the beautiful Diwani example sentences in the back.

Kufic script is the line of an old Arab, grew up in the beginnings of the emergence of Islam in the city of Kufa,
Iraq, believed to be initiated in use about 100 years ago before the establishment of Kufa. Which arose in the
confusion, which was near Kufa (and Kufa, established in the order of 18 e Umar ibn al-Khattab). It has been used
in writing, in the writing of the Koran in particular. And all the Koran, which you copied before the fourth
century AH wrote Balkovi, which shred the Ktato Kufa, then spread to the whole of Iraq. Also used in the
inscription on the walls of mosques, palaces and other Literary Islamic Architecture. This line Almsahvi on tilt

Ultimately, you can sit back and enjoy some of the book even if you can’t read much. For me, it’s sheer eye candy.

Give me more of that qalam!
